Dragon Staff - Technical Practice

The goal for this drawing was to come up with a design that had a bunch of different textures and required me to learn and apply different techniques to make it work. I tried combining glass, glow effects, scales, bone/keratin, a sort of metal and also thread all into one image to try and get some practise on the various textures.
By far, most of my time was spent on the scales, but it's the part I'm definitely happiest about.

All in all, I do feel like the exercise did help a lot and plan to do something similar in the future again.

Who would have guessed that drawing scales by hand would be so time-consuming?

Due to the scales needing to appear interlocked and on a three-dimensional object, I used guidelines to help set up their direction and set rules for the scales to follow, trying to mimic a snake's patterns in some ways.
